Common Garage Door, Gate Motor & Fence Problems — Explained

Pull the manual release cord and try moving the door by hand. If it moves freely, the fault is almost always electrical — a tripped breaker, a dead motor board, or a burnt-out capacitor — rather than mechanical, and that's usually a same-day fix. If the door itself is heavy or won't budge by hand, a spring has likely failed and the motor is fighting the full weight of the door on its own, which can damage it further if you keep trying the remote.

A humming or clicking motor with no movement usually points to a worn gearbox, a jammed chain or rack, or a failing capacitor. Continuing to press the remote repeatedly puts more strain on an already-struggling motor and can turn an inexpensive gearbox repair into a full motor replacement. Switch it off at the isolator and have it looked at before trying again.

Rarely. The most common causes are a flat remote battery, a receiver that lost its programming after a power dip or load-shedding cycle, or interference from another device nearby using the same frequency. We carry compatible remotes for most common motor brands and can usually re-programme the system on-site within minutes.

Yes, and it's worth treating as urgent rather than a minor annoyance. Frequent tripping is usually caused by an earth fault, moisture ingress into the energiser or connectors, or a strand touching foliage, a wall, or another conductive surface. Most installations automatically disable a faulty zone rather than leaving it live, which means that section of your perimeter can be effectively unprotected until the fault is found and cleared.

We quote clearly before any work begins, so you'll know the cost upfront rather than finding an inflated 'emergency' surcharge added at the end of the job. Call or WhatsApp with your suburb and the issue, and we'll confirm timing and cost together.

Both. We regularly work inside estates including Steyn City, Dainfern, Waterfall Country and Equestrian Estates, Blue Hills, Helderfontein, Cedar Lakes, Eagle Canyon, Kyalami and Copperleaf, as well as established suburbs like Sandhurst, Hyde Park, Houghton Estate and Rosebank. We're familiar with visitor sign-in and security escort procedures at these estates, so arrival isn't delayed at the gate.

Yes. Most of our call-outs are on gates, doors and fences we didn't originally install. We diagnose based on what's actually in front of us rather than assuming everything needs replacing.
